KLM 7 ARUA Diving Schedule Cenderawasih Bay
Tour #28-2011 Manokwari - Sorong
15. – 26. December 2011 (11 nights)

Biodiversity Explorations together with KLM 7 Arua is proud to present two spectacular exploratory diving safaris in December 2011 to legendary Cenderawasih Bay (Indonesian Papua).

This enthralling area east of Raja Ampat, along the coast of Indonesian West Papua. Recognized as one of the areas of highest biodiversity in the world, several new species have been discovered there recently. The cruise takes you over the Manokwari area, with its famous wrecks of World War II, Biak and the surrounding islands, but especially the protected area of Ahe home to a resident population of whale sharks.

These trips promise amazing encounters with whale sharks, exploring the wrecks of World War II around Manokwari and other incredible diving with sharks, bamboo, manta rays, Wobbegongs and all sorts of creatures in Raja Ampat. Gerald Allen Cenderawasih called the bay " the Galapagos of Indonesia’s Reefs." Several new species have been described recently in this area including a new species of garden eel and pseudochromida. In this adventurous journey you can visit the best dive sites in West Papua and the unique experience of diving with whale sharks...

DAY 1 – BOARDING in Manokwari (depending on arrival time at the airport)
The guests will be met the crew of Arua at Manokwari airport, usually in the morning/midday. From there, it is a 30 minute transfer to KLM 7 Arua. Once everyone is on board, we will lift the anchor and get underway. After snack/lunch we will have the boat briefing and immediate departure.

DAY 2 and 3 – Cenderawasih Bay, Diving with Whale Sharks, Ahe Reef
Locally known as “Taman Teluk Cenderawasih”, this extensive park includes 20 islands and a spectacular coastline, which stretches for about 500 km / 311 miles. With over 14,000 km2, the Cenderawasih Bay Marine National Park is the largest of its kind in Indonesia and offers a superb choice of scuba diving, trekking and bird watching.
The reefs of the Cenderawasih National Park, close to the island of AHE, near Nabire, are frequented by a population of whale sharks. It seems that these big creatures love to "suck" on the fishermen's nets full of fish. During this practice many congregate and remain in the same area for a long time. Also dugongs, dolphins, sea horses (not only pygmies), nudibranchs, cephalopods, fish, frogs and a wide variety of shrimp, including tiger shrimps live in the waters of the Marine Park. Diving the reefs surrounding Pulau Ahe offers the chance to see ghost pipefish, sea turtles, dolphins, wobbegong, wasp fish, parrot fish, bumphead parrotfish and other extraordinary marine creatures.
On Ahe Island it is possible to see the Red Bird of Paradise and the Cuscus (a mix between
koala bear and monkey).

DAY 4 and 5 – Island of Yapen
Despite Yapen is less known and visited than Biak, diving here is supposed to be fantastic, some say… Yapen is a mountainous island with charming local villages and hosts several species of Birds of Paradise. Nearby Arumbai island, encounters with dolphins swimming close to the coast are possible.

DAY 6 and 7 – Biak and the Archipelago of Padaido
The Padaido Archipelago is located east of Biak island, comprising 30 islands. Padaido means "un-describable beauty." The most beautiful areas of the archipelago are the picturesque islands of Ureba and Mansurbabo. On the other side of Kota Biak, the rock formations around Sambre and Urfu are not to be missed, together with the waterfalls of Wardo, the cave of Goa Binsari, the orchid and bird garden near Mokmer, the sandy beach and WWII artefacts at Bosnik, and the North Biak Reserve.
Nearby islands still to be explored are Numfor, Mios Num, Kaipuri, Supiori, Amboi and Kuran.

DAY 8 – Numfor and Biak
The island of Numfor is located between Biak and Manokwari and offers a wide choice of dive sites. The nearby island of Manem features some beautiful sandy beaches and offers a lot of sightings for bird watchers.

DAY 9 and 10 – Manokwari – Wreck Diving
In these waters there are more than 20 wrecks dating from WWII, of which only 5 can be visited. The wrecks of the area are still largely unexplored.
1- Pasir Putih Wreck: a navy coastal patrol boat, 30-35 m long, sitting upright at 13-22 m.
2-Pillbox Wreck: a cargo ship carrying ammunition lies in 9-16 m depth. The ship measures 60-65 m in length.
3-Cross Wreck: a coastal patrol boat teeming with life. The galley, engine room and radio
room can easily be explored.
4-MUPI Wreck: 40 m long sitting upright, the top part lies in 9 m depth covered with red and white soft corals. You can see a copper pot on the stove, bottles and ammunition.
5-Shinwa Maru Wreck: a large cargo ship with five holds. The superstructure is intact but the ship lies on its port side- we can find helmets, dishes, cables, small tanks and mines.

DAY 11 – PART OF NORTHERN PAPUA BARAT (INDONESIA PAPUA)
A long cruise will take us east to Manokwari. Do not miss the small island of Pulau Mios Susu where we will do our first dives. Possible encounter with the leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). Day 2 will be dedicated to exploratory dives along the beautiful northern Papua coast.

DAY 12 – Sorong
Unfortunately our trip comes to an end and we have to say goodbye but we hope to see you again soon! Arua will organize your transfer from the boat to Sorong airport, to take you back to Bali or Jakarta.

Note: This programme is a tentative schedule, subject to changes depending on many factors
